Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Uganda’s corner of the Virunga volcanoes: smaller than Bwindi, often quieter, with gorilla tracking plus golden monkey walks.
Same UWA tariff as Bwindi
Southwest Uganda
Separate activity fee
Mgahinga is part of the same Virunga massif as Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the DRC’s Virunga. Permits are UWA, not Rwandan. Logistics usually run through Kisoro. If Bwindi peak dates are sold out, ask operators about Mgahinga availability — it is not a secret workaround, just a smaller park.
Permit prices follow the Uganda Wildlife Authority Conservation Tariff (July 2024–June 2026). Confirm before you pay. Official PDF: UWA tariff PDF. Last editorial check: August 2026.
FAQ
Questions travellers ask first
Is Mgahinga easier than Bwindi?
Terrain is still volcanic and steep. Some days are shorter; some are not. Do not book Mgahinga solely as a “light” trek.
